月初LATITUDE画廊荣幸推出了我们2022年的第二个群展:《三足金乌》以庆祝纽约漫长的休眠后,即将来到的意蕴新生的季节及年轻艺术家们生机勃勃的思想。

三足金乌是一种广传东亚的传说生物,东方神话中相信这世上存在十只金乌,驱动着天上的十个太阳,象征着生机,活力 和永恒的力量。为了呼应这个名字,展览集结了一些最充满活力,最具有繁荣之势的色彩与意象。为了对抗寒冷的冬天和不幸的疫情应运而生,并对近期发生在纽约亚裔族群社区的可怖事件做出回应,艺术家通过作品展现了这些象征着力量的颜色、图像,和意向。在三足金乌展览中包含了许多杂糅诗意与政治的艺术作品,它们代表了在面对不幸时,创造力被激发出鲜艳动人的乐观活力。

L@展览的策展团队从今年年初开始设想此次展览的主题,并希望邀请多彩的春天来到曼哈顿的唐人街。虽然不定的天气和Omicron的疫情推迟了策展团队的工作数月,但我们非常愉悦最终和大家分享我们的工作成果。令人焦灼的策展工作与我们去年冬天每个人所经历的漫长斗争与动荡相呼应,象征着死而复生和灼灼的生命力。当然,众多积极的展览回应让我们欣慰和欢喜。展览将进行至五月一日,欢迎大家踏春光临。


Yukine Yanagi

In Search of Abundance, 2021

艺术家Yukine的创作开始于对心理、梦境般的景观的描绘,充满了穿着装饰服装的具象的、野兽般的幽灵。Yukine用精心设计的表情和服装塑造人物,为异想天开的想象力和冥想与沉思建立了一个超脱世俗的地方。通过创作寓言故事,Yukine通过生物中心主义的镜头探索了文化历史、中国和日本的民间传说、个人关系、唯心主义以及表现出对怪诞、忧郁和死亡的痴迷。她试图用古怪的幽默和智慧编织出当代时代的理解和经历。她的作品受到新艺术、表现主义、抽象是表现主义、超现实主义和传统东亚民间艺术的启发,尤其是木版画和木偶戏。


Jessica Wee

作为一名旅居加拿大、法国、意大利和美国的韩裔亚洲艺术家,Jessica Wee 一直与自身民族文化认同的概念有着复杂的关系。对“家乡”感的不连续性促使她必须协商一种自己独有的方式而存在于当下。就像将多个破碎的角色组合成一个存在一样,她创造了来自不同时间和地点的碎片记忆和身份多重板块。凭借在意大利学习了四年古典油画技术的扎实基础,她最近专注于在涂有韩国传统宣纸的画布上创作混合生物和拟人植物的超现实梦境,探索她与不同文化的错综复杂的关系。

作为第二代亚裔美国人,画家Ray Hwang不断发现自己处于两种文化之间的对比决定和想法之间。不断重温这些记忆和他的作品,Ray认为他画中的元素就像一个演员的演员,因为他们正在回应一个导演,一个不可靠的叙述者,他讨厌排练的想法。连同他生活中的具体参考资料,例如游乐场的龙雕塑、电力游侠可动人偶或榴莲果;这一系列角色被演变成一部卡通风格的个人民间传说绘画小说,暗示并暗示了多样性、语码转换、内部戏剧和跨文化矛盾在他的一生中如何频繁地交织在一起。

Jia Sung

作为一个出生在明尼苏达州、新加坡长大、现居住在布鲁克林的亚裔酷儿女性,Jia Sung在西方接受移植和成年的经历让她开始质疑,在不重演拜物教和东方主义动态的情况下,重新连接继承的故事意味着什么。Jia Sung从中国神话和佛教图像中汲取灵感,通过酷儿女权主义的视角重新诠释这些档案中蕴含的阴阳怪气的价值观。她的作品使用民间传说中熟悉的视觉语言来审视和颠覆围绕女性人性设定的参数,奇怪的人和那些被认为是“其他”的人。通过结合刺绣和珠饰,Jia Sung创造了镶嵌在表面上的冥想片段,作为对手工艺品和女性化劳动的情书。她最近在编织方面的探索进一步融合了纺织工作和叙事中的这些兴趣,通过织物上的每一根线表现出来。

Jia Sung is an artist and educator, born in Minnesota, bred in Singapore, now based in Brooklyn.

Her paintings and artist books have been exhibited across North America, including the Knockdown Center, RISD Museum, Wave Hill, EFA Project Space, Lincoln Center, Yale University, and MOMA PS1. Her work has been published in The Paris Review, Emergence Magazine, Hyperallergic, Jacobin Magazine, and Asian American Writers Workshop, and collected by the Met, SFMOMA, and the Special Collections at Yale, SAIC, and RISD. She has taught at organizations like the AC Institute, Abrons Arts Center, Children’s Museum of the Arts, and Museum of Chinese in America. She was a 2018-2019 Smack Mellon Studio Artist and Van Lier Fellow, and is currently an adjunct professor at RISD, where she received her BFA in 2015.


 


Ray Hwang (b. 1992) is an artist from Los Angeles, currently living and working out of Ridgewood, NY. He received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2016 and has participated in exhibitions in Los Angeles, Denver, Philadelphia, New Jersey and throughout New York City since. He has been featured most recently with Vantage Art Projects, Art Maze Magazine, and was the most recent recipient of the Plum Lime Residency in Brooklyn, NY.


 


Tiantian Lou is an artist currently based in Brooklyn, NY. Tiantian graduated from Princeton University, School of Architecture, in 2021. Before graduate school, she participated in the artist residence program at Textile Arts Center and received her B.Arch and BFA from Rhode Island School of design.


 


Daniel Wheedong Kim studied Fine Art in Seoul and New York and uses painting as his main language. After he was born in Korea in 1996, he grew up in 11 different cities and has not established a fixed cultural identity, but has established a complex cultural identity. As he encountered various cultures and media, he witnessed the world with various realities and values collide and coexist in confusion. He uses Anime as a visual language and material to express the world he sees.


 


Jessica Wee (b. 1988, New Jersey) is a Korean artist who grew up in Paris and Montreal. After receiving a BFA in painting and drawing from Concordia University with a minor in traditional animation (2011), she spent four years studying classical realism painting techniques in Italy (2017). Between 2019 and 2021 she acted as the head assistant painter for contemporary artist Angel Otero in New York. In 2021 she received an Explore and Create Grant for a 2-year project from the Canada Arts Council. Her work is presented within White Columns Artist Registry, the Rad Hourani Collection and has been exhibited in Montreal, Toronto and London (online). She currently lives and works in Montreal.


 


Madeline Bohrer is an alumna of Boston University, and received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In the past she has exhibited at Tchotchke Gallery, Artpowher, Adelson Gallery, SPF 32 at William Ulmer Brewery, Spoonbill Studio and the Berkshire Museum. She has also completed residencies at Silver Arts, Centre Pompadour, Miss Hall’s School and Casa-Tagumerche.


 


Ingrid Lu (b.2000) is an artist from Taipei, Taiwan, now based in New York. She is currently pursuing a degree in BFA Fine Arts at Parsons School of Design. By often integrating collages and mixed media in her paintings and sculptures, she explores the idea of personal space through the ritualistic while mundane daily happenings. She had her first solo exhibition Plaid Time curated by Off-Site Art in Taiwan in 2021.


 


Yukine was born in Tokyo and grew up in Shanghai. She received her BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2020. She is currently living and working in Providence, Rhode Island. Her work has been shown in group shows in the United States, Italy, and China.
